With a great sense of pride, I can report that Zimbabwe is one of the 4 African countries  exhibiting at the 55th Venice Biennale, which is taking place from the 1st of June – 24th November this year, in Venice Italy. Through the ministry of education, sport, art and culture Zimbabwe has been officially  invited to participate at this prestigious event that has fondly been referred to as the Olympics of the world’s visual arts.

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s chief curator Mr. Raphael Chikukwa, will curate the pavilion, while the executive director will be the commissioner. The prestigious event offers Zimbabwe an opportunity to showcase its rich artistic side after years of international isolation. Mr. Raphael Chikukwa said when asked about the return, “we are so excited to be given this opportunity to return to Venice again!”

Attendance at such a prestigious event speaks volumes about the ability of a country to pursue and excel in the arts and allows the image of its country to be greatly enhanced. It also gives a tremendous platform to our young artists, for this platform is normally awarded to veteran artists that have an extensive body of work accumulated over time. Furthermore, it is a great opportunity for us as a country to show the world that Zimbabwe has arrived and is a great place to come and visit. Art lovers, who have the opportunity to visit the 55th Venice Biennale, should take this opportunity to visit the Zimbabwean pavilion where they will gain a real insight into Zimbabwean art and culture.
